Questions about WP 404.php page
  • Bit confused about this 404.php page. How do you get it to activate and come up automatically when there is url error?

  • Hi earthlad

First, here is more information about the 404 page, in the wordpress codex:

    http://codex.wordpress.org/Creating_an_Error_404_Page

As well, in Striking Responsive we provide the ability to assign the 404 page a custom sidebar, and give it custom content in the feature header area via the Archive settings in the Striking Advanced Panel.

Please let me know if the above answers your questions.

  • Hi

If it does not come up on your website, you could check your plugins used or the htaccess file in the root of your server.

A plugin could redirect the url of the 404. Also the htaccess can do so. Pls consult your hoster if it does not work and you have no plugin installed.

  • I didn't realise at first that the theme came with a 404.php, so in the beginning I made my own 404 page (as I normally do with my hand coded sites). So the url is:

    http://www.webopus.co.uk/custom404

The htaccess file in the root says:

    ErrorDocument 404 /custom404

It seems to me it's a path problem?

    Thanks.
  • Yes

pls remove that line or comment it out by putting a hashtag infront of it.

  • I've removed the line above as suggested, no luck I'm afraid. My set up involves running wordpress in its own folder, but on the web it runs as if installed at the root. This might complicate things I guess. Also, I made a mistake when installing, so in fact the striking theme path is actually:

    wp-content/themes/striking/striking

I don't really know how to correct the above path situation.

There is an htaccess in the root (the one I removed the above line from), there is also one in the wordpress folder root:

    htaccess in webspace root:

    # BEGIN WordPress

    RewriteEngine On
    RewriteBase /
    RewriteRule ^index\.php$ - [L]
    RewriteCond %{REQUEST_FILENAME} !-f
    RewriteCond %{REQUEST_FILENAME} !-d
    RewriteRule . /index.php [L]

    # END WordPress

  • Hi

i removed the double striking theme.

the 404.php comes up automatically on your website. You can now change the content of the 404.php so it accomodates your need.

  • Hi Paul

Thanks so much for your time and trouble, very much appreciated!
  • I have never actually seen so many questions about the 404 page before!

But in any case, you now know with Striking you can customize the sidebar and the header using the built in Striking Functions, and I guess if you really felt so inclined, you could even modify the template, although I would recommend against doing this.
