I'm trying to set up the Blog section of the theme and have the right sidebar enabled, but when I go to the Widgets page to add the various bits and pieces I want in there, it won't work.
None of the boxes on the right will open and none of the individual widgets are click- or dragable.
I'm up-to-date on Wordpress, but I can't get the theme itself to update (been trying all day, but it keeps coming back with a "please enter your ID" error message, despite having entered it...).
as a common update problem is users attempting to update without first having saved their license code per steps 2 and 3 in REGULAR USER - NO CHILD THEME IN USE:.
If this does not work, which can happen on rare occasions as your server host may have mod security or apache settings that are forbidding the communication with our api, this can also happen due to some special rules in your .htaccess file.
If you could not use the internal update even after following the guidelines in the thread, then update your theme by ftp. It will take you a few extra minutes to do it the "old fashioned" way, but up to about 6 months ago, that was the only way to update a theme typically.
Striking 5.1.8.3 and wp 3.4.1 are optimized to work together. Due to changes in the wp core commencing with wp 3.4, no version of striking prior to 5.1.8.2 will work correctly with wp 3.4, and striking 5.1.8.3 is optimized for wp 3.4.1. Any mismatch usually leads to problems.
After you have done the update, follow the instructions in the sticky thread regarding clearing cache, etc. If after all that you are having functionality issues, next step is to check your plugins for compatibility by turning them all off, and then starting them back up one by one until you find the culprit. You may also want to reinstall wp 3.4.1 just to confirm you do not have a corrupt wp install - this is rare but again it does happen.
These are the very same steps we undertake when a user contacts us and we go in to determine the problem.
If none of the above restores the functionality then send me a pm with your wp and ftp login details, and i will poke around. Usually a problem of the nature of the widget page itself not working points to a core issue, as the function of that page is not strictly theme related. So our typical logic is to determine "what is interfering with the function of the core" and the most likely culprit is a bad install, then a bad script within something. Since Striking has worked with it for 2 years and thousands of sales, that tells us to look elsewhere.....
BTW, please confirm you are on linux hosting, not windows hosting. Striking and wp do not function very well in the windows environment.
Thanks for such a detailed response. I'll go through and try all of these now and let you know if something doesn't work correctly once I've investigated.
Ran through all the steps you suggested, managed the update and discovered it's the Optin Skin plugin that's causing the issue.
Do you know if there are any known issues with Optin? I can't see anything on the forums and wasn't sure whether to close this thread and open a new one or if it should stay off here and I need to go back to Optin Skin's author?
Sigh, its always a plugin. As an aside, it should be pointed out to all users that 99% of all plugins are designed for use, and tested only for, the Twenty Ten theme.
I actually have never heard of this plugin. Its never been mentioned on the forums before and we have one of the largest premium wp theme user bases on the planet.
I suggest you approach the plugin author. Likely they do not support when used in a premium theme, but you can try.
One other thing you can try is to wrap the plugin shortcode (if that is how it works) with the raw tags. This is no guarantee of a solution, but its worth a shot. The raw tag resolves a lot of plugin interactions.
