Re installed Wordpress now want to re install backed up striking files
  • Hi guys,
I changed domain names and have been having trouble getting things to work so i did a wordpress reinstall and am wondering if I can now reinstall my striking files as they were previously?
I have the content folder backed up on my desktop and have dropped it into position in my FTP, but my previous fonts/colours/settings havnt shown up, only my plugins have..
Is there something major i'm missing to get it to work?
I had to create a new sql database when i reinstalled - are my old striking files linked with my old sql data base or something?

    Thanks

  • Hi

You have to put in more info

    1) name old website and installed path.

    2) name new website and installed path.

Normally you can drop the new database and import the old one. However your data has to be in the same location or you need to issue sql statements to make it match the new location.

  • Old website www.stylechicboutique.com.au
    New website www.stylechicinteriors.com
Where do I find the install path?
  • Are they on the same server in the same folder? You only need to adjust the database.

what you could have done is installed on the old site a plugin called backup buddy. Now generate a complete backup (folders and database). Then generate a restore script (in backupbuddy) and upload that script plus the backup into the root of the new website. Run the restore script. Backupbuddy will ask you for the new database settings and the new url and will work its way through the database.

You can also do this by issueing sql statements if you know todo this.

    Then you just

    1) make a backup of all folders + database old website
    2) create a database on the new website and import the old data
    3) upload the folders by ftp.
    4) now issue sql statements to alter all entries from old url to new url.
    5) login and do a save of the striking settings, clear the cache and do a save of the permalinks and adjust the new email address.

If you are not familiar todo so i advice you to hire somebody who can.

  • Just opening up this discussion back up as its still kind of related.
Being new to all this, ive now realised that I didnt back up my data base when switching domains (only striking files and folders from ftp)
    Stupid mistake, Alas, lesson learned.
Next question is, is the text that was in my blog posts, about page etc stored as part of my database or is this stored in one of my FTP files like the logos and images are?

    (Hope this makes sense)

    Thanks
  • Hi

Wp is a dynamic website. which means pages are created when called upon. Nothing exists without the database. Every bit you type is stored in the database. Nothing except images are stored in the folders.

You can try the google cache system to see if the pages are still in there.

Do you still have access to the old website?

Ask your ex-hoster they do have backups.

  • Yeah they couldn't 'access' it apparently
Thanks anyway.. wont make the same mistake again!
  • And you believe that? Neah...... How long ago did you move? That would be a poor hosting company if they do not have backups more then a month old or so.
