Just so everyone knows, to create a basic portfolio image, steps are:
a) go to Portfolio items in the wp admin menu on left side, and select categories. b) create one or more categories and save. c) then go to the Portfolios Items menu again, and select "Add New" so that you go to the page to create a new portfolio item d) on the Add New Portfolio Item Page:
- give this post a title
- click on Upload/Insert button above the wp editor to upload an image, and make this image the featured image of the post. Note, you just upload the image and then click on the link to make it the featured image of the post. But you do not need to click on "insert into post" unless you have turned off "Featured Image" in the Striking Portfolio Panel page - if you have turned that off, then what will happen is the featured image you have just uploaded will show on the page where you have inserted the portfolio shortcode, but the featured image will not display on the actual portfolio item page when they have clicked on the read more button (or title if you made the portfolio title linkable). So if you have Featured Image off in the portfolio options page, then you should also add the image to the portfolio post. - if just a basic image post, then you just select the portfolio category you wish to add the portfolio item to, and you can then save.
You have now created a basic portfolio single post item, which will display an image when called by the portfolio shortcode.
Here are some other basic portfolio types:
In order to create a youtube or vimeo video portfolio item, you have a number of steps.
a) Add new portfolio item b) give the portfolio post a title, and save the draft. c) go to youtube and find your item d) you need to make a placeholder image, which is a screenshot of the video. You of course can use any image you want, but if you want it to be the first frame or two of the video, you can use a program like Lightscreen to create a jpeg or png. e) load the place holder image up using the Upload/Insert media button, and make it the featured image of the video portfolio post. f) go down to the Portfolio Item Options section below the post editor. g) change the Portfolio Type to Video using the dropdown box. h In the Video Link for Lightbox post in the full url to the video h) you do not need to adjust the video width and height unless you desire to override your settings found on your portfolio panel i) choose a Thumbnail Icon if you do not want the default icon j)select the portfolio category you wish the item to be place in. k) Use the excerpt button to create an excerpt if you desire one.
Save (Update button) your portfolio item.
You can only use this method for youtube and vimeo videos.
Please note that when you go to the single portfolio post page, the video will not show on the page, only the featured image (the placeholder image you installed) will show. So if you want the video to show on the single portfolio post page, you must also use the media video shortcode to place the video into the post body content. To compensate for this, Striking has a setting in the Portfolio Panel, single portfolio options wherein you can turn off the featured image, that way on every page, you can use the media shortcode to install your picture or video at the top of the post body content, and that item will show in place of the featured image.
For creation of an HTML5/Self Hosted Portfolio Video Item
one can use it to create a video portfolio item using mp4, flv, ogg and webm videos. Typically, you should have more then one format used in the post creation, so that no matter what browser or device your site viewer is using, they will have a fallback to a format that works. We will outline below the steps in order for you to do such.
a) Add new portfolio item b) give the portfolio post a title, and save the draft. c) On your desktop you need to make a placeholder image, which is a screenshot of the video. You of course can use any image you want, but if you want it to be the first frame of the video, you can use a program like Lightscreen to create a jpeg or png. d) Next upload your video to your site. Unless the video size is under 8-10mb (which will depend on your host) you will likely need to import your videos by ftp. Furthermore, you should take your video, and convert it to other formats, and upload those formats to the folder in which you are placing your video content. e) load the place holder image up using the Upload/Insert media button, and make it the featured image of the video portfolio post. f) go down to the Portfolio Item Options section below the post editor. g) change the Portfolio Type to Lightbox using the dropdown box. h) Then using the shortcode in the main post editor, create a video shortcode for each of the video types, and place all the shortcodes, one after the other, in the Lightbox Content field. Leave one blank space between each shortcode(they cannot be directly after each other with no spaces). h) you need to adjust the Lightbox width and height so that they are slightly larger then the video height and width you set in the video shortcodes, that way the lightbox envelopes the video. i) choose a Thumbnail Icon if you do not want the default icon j) select the portfolio category you wish the item to be place in. k) Use the excerpt button to create an excerpt if you desire one.
Save (Update button) your portfolio item.
I hope the above info helps with some basic portfolio creations.
I created a portfolio consisting of two videos and I used the steps from James (For creation of an HTML5/Self Hosted Portfolio Video Item). It works but in the lightbox frame two videos show up. I expected 2 "pages", each for every video. Have I missed something?
www.peterennienke.nl (at the bottom, just press the beautiful turtle.)
Paul is in the same country as you, and since you are in the same timezone, it will be easier for he to explain things (its midnight for me and I just rolled into my house a little while ago and I am on a diff continent!).
You appear to have put two videos in the same portfolio item, whereas you should create 2 separate portfolio items, one for each video, put both in the same portfolio category, and then use the portfolio shortcode to call that category to put them on the screen.
Thanks for the quick reply. The explanation of James was the extra information I needed to put the videos on screen. Also for the correct portfolio shortcode I had to select a catogory (every video had the same category) and select the ids (portfolio items).
Just some final questions / remarks: - the shortcode also has the following code: lightboxTitle="imagetitle". However the title of the image/ video is not displayed? - the videos are displayed in a lightbox frame but the pause button doesn't work (instead you go to the previous image / video. Actually all buttons do not work, you can only start the video by clicking on the icon in the middle of the video. - is it possible to create a gallery of videos (this is possible with images) or a mix of videos and images?
I just ran some brief tests, and I think we have some issues with the lightbox title options, which we just added in the last release of Striking. I see when i chose imagetitle, i got the portfolio post title, and when i tried to select image caption, i got nothing at all. I think when we did the release, we have a mixup between the old code and the new code.
we are planning on an update likely early to mid next week, so I will work on this to correct.
For the html5 video, the support and options are going to depend on what plugins you have installed into your browser to support html5 content. For example, i have the dvix plugin installed into my firefox browser, so i see a full set of controls. But, if i did not, then it defaults back to flash, in which case one has no controls at all. I think you need to do a little reading on html5 in general. When you post a self hosted vid, you can post several formats all into the one post, and when someone views it, it will depend on what their browser supports for playback (and the options they have selected for various vid types with their browser plugins), that determine control sets. I have the divx player and vlc player installed in mine, so I get the max control sets - which are not much in any case for html5!
When you say a gallery, do you mean a wp gallery, or a portfolio gallery. A wp gallery can show only images. A portfolio shortcode posted on a page can show any items you want. A portfolio gallery, which is created in a single portfolio item post by using the following in the Portfolio Item Options section found down below the wp editor:
a) selecting "Portfolio Type" to "Gallery" b) which then brings up below by ajax a section called "Portfolio Gallery" where you can add images
only allows for images. You cannot create a gallery of videos using this feature. Portfolio items which videos can only be created 1 video = one portfolio post
