Creating a single Portfolio Video post - Usage How To
  • I keep trying to add youtube video to my portfolio but for some reason all I get is text.

    I have followed these instructions:

If you want to show video when click on a single portfolio item, You can use this type to show it. After you select this type and input a video url ( flash, youtube or vimeo) in video link for lightbox. When you click the thumbnail of portfolio item, it will popup a video box.

But for some reason it does not work at all...

I believe that there might be a bug...

Would you be able to help me?

The usual way (but not the only way) to create a youtube video portfolio post in Striking you have a number of steps.

    a) Add new portfolio item
    b) give the portfolio post a title, and save the draft.
    c) go to youtube and find your item
    d) if this is not your own youtube item, then you need to make a placeholder image, which is a screenshot of the video. You of course can use any image you want, but if you want it to be the first frame or two of the video, you can use a program like lightscreen to create a jpeg or png.
    e) load the place holder image up using the Upload/Insert media button, and make it the featured image of the video portfolio post.
    f) go down to the Portfolio Item Options section below the post editor.
    g) change the Portfolio Type to Video using the dropdown box.
    h) in the Video Link for Lightbox field post the full youtube url
    i) you do not need to adjust the video width and height unless you desire to override your settings found on your portfolio panel
    j) choose a Thumbnail Icon if you do not want the default icon
k)select the portfolio category you wish the item to be place in.
    l) Use the excerpt button to create an excerpt if you desire one.

Save (Update button) your portfolio item.

You can only use this method for youtube and vimeo videos.

Please note that when you go to the single portfolio post page, the video will not show on the page, only the featured image (the placeholder image you installed) will show. So if you want the video to show on the single portfolio post page, you must also use the media video shortcode or a lightbox or iframe shortcode or embed code to place the video into the post body content. To compensate for this, Striking has a setting in the Portfolio Panel, single portfolio options wherein you can turn off the featured image, that way on every post page, you can use the media shortcode to install your picture or video at the top of the post body content, and that item will show in place of the featured image.

I don't recall Paul mentioning to me anything about Https (or if he did, I forgot, in which case my apologies Paul!). However, depending on the browser and its plugins you are using, you may have by accident selected to default to https for supported sites (https everywhere plugin for firefox for example or google youtube https optin in your account) and thus this is why one is getting https instead of http. This behavior has nothing to do with Striking, but until one figures out its one's security settings in their browser, it is a pain in the ass to identify. And of course it will mess up file paths and viewing tremendously.

    Happy Striking
