STRIKING RELEASE VER 5.1.8.1 May 21, 2012
  • This is the thread for all discussions related to Ver 5.1.8.1 changes.

As soon as it is approved by Themeforest, which should be in the next 24 hours (time currently is 1:25PM EST) this version will be available as both a full theme download via your Themeforest account. HOWEVER, IT IS NOW AVAILABLE as a build download (which is new & changed files only) via your Striking Advanced Panel within your WP admin.

NEW STRIKING USER AND VER 5.1.8.1 IS YOUR FIRST EVER INSTALL:

You would install Striking Ver 5.1.8.1 in the same manner as you would install any other wordpress theme. You can install Striking Ver 5.1.8.1 by using the install theme function in your wordpress admin, or by ftp Striking into your host setup. The Document folder contained within your download from Themeforest has a section on installation of the Striking theme.

EXISTING STRIKING USERS - YOUR CURRENT VERSION INSTALLED IS STRIKING VER 5.1.8 OR EARLIER

For existing users, here is the process depending on if you use a child theme or a regular Striking installation:

REGULAR USER - NO CHILD THEME IN USE:
    1. Go to the Striking Advanced panel and scroll down to the Update Theme section which is at the bottom of the panel.
    2. Enter your Themeforest purchase code into the "Item Purchase Code" field. The purchase code is found in a text document contained in the Themeforest zip when you first downloaded Striking after purchase, and the text document name is "striking-premium-corporate-portfolio-wp-theme-license.txt". A few lines into that document you will see "Item Purchase Code" and it will be a long string of numbers, letters and dashes.
    3. Click on the "Save Changes" button, your panel will refresh after saving and you will see yellow bar with the notification "page saved" appearing at the top of the panel.
    4. Now click on the "Update" button, and your theme should commence the update routine.
    5. Once the update is installed, go immediately to your Striking Advanced Panel, and in the General section go to the "Clear Cache" button and trigger it to "On" and save the panel. This clears the image temp cache folder.
    6. Now go to your homepage and other site pages and check to confirm that all your images and other media are working successfully.
    7. If you are still having a problem, see the section below "After Update I Have Site Issues"

    CHILD THEME IN USE:

Striking Ver 5.1.8.1 includes an updated Child Theme Ver 0.7 so you have to update your child theme as well or you will have issues! Most likely your slider images won't work, but perhaps other problems can occur.

    1. Go to your WP Theme Admin Panel and activate your existing main Striking theme (most likely Ver 5.1.8) which deactivates your Striking child theme. VERY IMPORTANT - activate Striking not the default WP Twenty Eleven theme as if you activate the latter you might lose all your sidebar and footer widgets.
    2. Ftp to your your site and rename child theme folder to another name (ex "oldstrikingchild"), or even better, back up the child theme to your local host, and delete the online child.
    3. Go back to your Striking Advanced Panel, input your purchase code into the purchase code field (see details above for "Regular User #2" on how to find it) and save the panel. The panel will refresh after saving.
    4. In the Striking Advanced Panel "Update" field, click on the "Update" button to commence the update to Striking 5.1.8.1.
    5. Once the update is completed successfully, in the Striking Advanced Panel go to the Clear Cache button and trigger it to "On" and save the panel. This clears the image temp cache folder.
    6. Now upload the new Striking child theme Ver 0.7 by the WP Themes Install Theme panel, or by ftp.
    7. Re-do/add back your custom code in the files of the child theme functions.php and style.css
    8. In your WP Manage Themes panel activate the child theme.

You should now be successfully updated for both Striking and the Striking Child.

After Update I Have Site Issues

If you find that for some reason, you cannot see your slider images, or your colors are not working, then we suggest:

    • you first go to your Striking Color panel and resave it, and if that does not work, then you may have to check your Cache folder permissions.
    • Also check the Striking Advanced Panel to confirm that the Timthumb has not been turned on in the update process. We have not experienced this error in some time, but on the outside chance of it still being present in some unique situation, we suggest it just in case.
    • One should also check one's .htaccess file - some users have added some custom code to their .htaccess file, and this has caused problems with updates. Try temporarily removing the .htaccess file and then resaving one of the panels or pages, plus clearing the cache, to see if that restores everything. If this works, then you will have to go through your .htaccess mods item by item to determine the problem.
    • Plugins: We think by now most users understand that on occasion a plugin can interfere with a theme function. So one of the very first measures a user should undertake after an update, should they find an issue in the use of the Striking theme is to deactivate all plugins and see if that makes a difference. Please note that generally, most security plugins and askimet do not conflict with themes, so you might not need to deactivate them, unless the security plugin rewrites the .htaccess file. If so, deactivate this only as a last resort. In this circumstance, it is ok to message us as per the instruction below, without deactivating, if you are uncertain or uncomfortable about turning off the security.

NEW REQUEST: IF YOU HAVE UPDATED SUCCESSFULLY, AND HAVE A PROBLEM OF ONLY YOUR MEDIA IS NOT WORKING AND HAVE GONE THROUGH ALL THE MEASURES ABOVE - DO NOT POST IN THE ERROR THREAD, BUT INSTEAD SEND A PM TO ME, PAUL OR LIN.

However, should you have found an actual code error please report such errors you might find in this thread. We find concentrating all error and usage questions about a separate release in one place has been the most effective way for we to track, and users to determine, and followup, on version tidings.

AND WE REPEAT, AGAIN, POST ABOUT ANY ERRORS YOU MIGHT FIND, ONLY IN THIS THREAD. IF YOU POST THEM ON THE FORUM, THEY WILL BE DELETED IMMEDIATELY! AND WE WON'T BOTHER RESPONDING TO YOUR ISSUE SINCE YOU WERE NOT INTELLIGENT ENOUGH TO RESPECT OUR FORUM REQUESTS!

As per our past practice, we will respond right within your comment in this thread on our findings, suggestions and corrections.

If you think you have an outstanding bug from a prior release that has not been dealt with, then repost in this thread after only after you have updated to this version and tested to confirm it still exists. If we could not recreate the error in our test environments, then the matter may be unresolved. But if you have an unresolved concern, post in this thread (nicely please) and it will be examined in due course.

We hope that you find the update beneficial. Thank you to all the Striking users who contributed feedback on issues or features of the last release.

    Happy Striking
    James

  • Hello team!

Since version 5.1.8.1, the "Read more button 'in the blog (via short code) no longer visible. only as text. It is enabled in the settings. What is wrong?

Example on our test site: http://playground.ihc-ml.de/blog/

    Short code: [blog count="5" cat="1" imageType="default" desc_length="35" nopaging="false"]

As from version 5.1.8.1 you can add this code to the shortcode read_more="true" to display the button.

But somehow it does not seem to work. So thanks for reporting this we will get back to you

  • Hi there!

Under the blog feature, I have the "Related & Popular Post Module" activated.

However, in the blog posts they are shown as "Latest & Popular" rather than "Related & Popular" at least is how it has been translated. However, both list show the same so I think it's not adding so much value.

    Are they working as expected?

You can see the blog here:

PS: Since the Bug Forums is closed I'm opening this issue here...

And this is in fact exactly where you are to be posting anything issue, question or error related. As per our request. So Thanks! James

    Hi,

You can unzip the attached file to striking folder. I added a new option "Related Post Base on" in striking->blog options page.

You can change it to 'Same categories' if you want.

  • Okay, so here is what I did to upgrade the child theme after automatically upgrading the base theme:

    1. Cleared Cache
    2. Changed theme to Twenty-Ten
    3. FTPed into my site and deleted the striking-child (0.6.0) directory
    4. FTPed the new striking-child (0.7.0) theme
    5. Activated Striking Child without any of my changes and it still had double/double admin menus.
5a. Two admin menus each with double entries.
    6. Sat disappointed :((

    There is more now...

    1. Reactivated Twenty-Ten
    2. Copied my changes into style.css
    3. Reactivated Striking Child
    4. It's working!
    5. Sitting here overjoyed :D
    ------------------------------------
    Hi
I am glad you are overjoyed! :D But I am very puzzled as to why you updated the way you did. It was the hard way to get to the end result. But hey, you got there, and we are happy too!

  • Hi guys, I just updated to the latest version of Striking and Striking child, following the step by step instructions, and found an issue in admin interface of the child theme.
When the base Striking theme is activated its left button in the admin interface's bar is displayed correctly showing all the options from general to advanced.
When I activate the child theme, the Striking child button doubles and so does all the options inside them and even the admin panel when an option is clicked. Changing an option in the panel and saving it makes appear two info boxes on top saying "Updated succesfully".

Apart of that, the content of the website itself is displayed correctly so it's just an annoying admin-side thing.

I checked all the possible steps mentioned above, set the correct permissions my host raccomand and even switched from the Italian version of wordpress which I used, to the international english version just in case......same issue!

Thanks in advance for any help.

    Nico

    PS. Wordpress 3.3.2 - Striking 5.1.8.1 - Striking child 0.7.0
    ------------------------------
Please download the original stiking 5.18.1 from themeforest, unpack it. Now from the striking.zip unpack the functions.php and upload that one into the original striking folder (NOT THE CHILD THEME FOLDER) overwriting the one which is already there.

All works perfectly now, many thanks!
  • Since the other thread is now closed. Where can I find my purchase code? I'm still unable to update to 5.1.8.1 because of that error?
    -----------------------------------
    Hi Robert:
I quote from the instructions found in the head of this thread in the section Regular User - No Child Theme Part 2: The purchase code is found in a text document contained in the Themeforest zip when you first downloaded Striking after purchase, and the text document name is "striking-premium-corporate-portfolio-wp-theme-license.txt". A few lines into that document you will see "Item Purchase Code" and it will be a long string of numbers, letters and dashes.

If you look in your themeforest download, you will see several folders, two zip folders, and 2 text documents. One of which is titled per the above.

As per the installation instructions in the same Regular User section, you type your purchase code into the field, save the panel, and then click on the update button.

If you have any issues after attempting to update via this method, please send me a pm.

  • well i have a problem i have added my purchase code, i click update and than there is a notice:
    Unpacking...
    Can't copy the package...
    Instalation Failed...

Do i need to change any chmod
    -------------------------------------
    Hi wanieczki
Not at this point. My first questions would be were you installing the striking.zip that is found within the Themeforest download (which is correct), or trying to install the whole themeforest zip you downloaded (which is incorrect).

You could be running into a simple issue of the striking package being to big to install, which can happen on a few shared hosts, wherein, the solution is to unpack the striking.zip, and then ftp the striking theme folder into your theme folder found within your wordpress installation.

If all of this sounds unfamiliar, please send me a pm. While I am pressed for time (and working on vids for those of you who might be wondering), an install takes about 30 seconds, so I can certainly step away to do that and allow you to at least get started.

Well james i was using the auto update option from the wordpress menus
    -----------------------------
    Hi
Ok, Just to be clear, you were using the update function within the Striking Advance Panel. Ok, as I was typing this message I see the little prompt that you sent me a pm, so I will go take a look. I believe we have a substantial time diff between us, so please be patient - I also have some other various requests in front of yours, but as updates are a minor matter, I will bump you as it can be quickly dealt with.

  • Hi Guys
Here's another user who really wants the Read more button on the blog to work again
    Cheers,
    Dinil
    -----------------------------
    Hi Dinil
If you go up a few comments, you will find that we attached a zip file to the comment from Raikit, which you can install into your theme via ftp, to fix the problem. You just click on the zip to download it to your desktop (and unzip of course), and then ftp it to swap it with the current file in the Striking theme.

In IE + Safari it works well. Help is highly appreciated. Thanks!

  • Yes Paul and i have a comment that files couldnt be copied.
  • I get this when attempting to update, before I did I cleared the cache, de-activated plugins.

    Here's the message

    upgrade/from/5.1.7.1/to/5.1.8.1.zip…

    Unpacking the package…

Catchable fatal error: Object of class WP_Error could not be converted to string in /home/xtremead/public_html/wp-includes/formatting.php on line 1250

    Update,
Is there any help from this issue? Haven't received any response.
  • Greetings guys,

I just realized where I posted this yesterday is a closed thread, so I am re-posting it here today. I am on the path to upgrade to 5.1.8.1 and I am having issues with the admin panel updating.

I am getting stuck upgrading to 5.1.7.1 from 5.1.7 which is where it taking me first.

I am performing the upgrade via the admin panel. Purchase code is saved. Downloading works but apply it seems to fail.

    >Unpacking the package…
    >Could not copy files.
    >Installation Failed

Full disclosure - a few days ago I upgraded successfully to 5.1.7.1 on my way to 5.1.8, but then ran into that double admin menu issue mentioned above with 5.1.8 (I have a child theme) and it got too late so I rolled back my changes. My hosting company wpengine.com offers a sweet restore-point system that allows me to make snapshots and roll back any change. Its worked flawlessly every time before including rolling back to my starting point 5.1.7 which is where I am at now.

    Any advice?

    -----
UPDATE! My permissions were screwed up on the child-theme folder. So I copied it down local and had the hosting company fix it. I then deleted the child-theme folder and my upgrade from 5.1.7 to 5.1.7.1 has completed.

HOWEVER! I have a new problem. Going from 5.1.7.1 to 5.1.8.1 is not working. The site says to 'upgrade to 5.1.8.1' and all the upgrade buttons show up and work properly, but when I execute the upgrade function within striking it comes back and says "strking is at the latest version". So it never completes. I am still at 5.1.7.1 with no child-theme installed.

    And advice now?

    -----
UPDATE!! I am fully upgraded to 5.1.8.1, with a child theme and no apparent issues.

The steps I performed were as follows, since the auto-update feature within the striking control panel did not work:

    1. downloaded and deleted my child theme.
    2. delete the striking theme ala FTP client
    3. download striking again from themeforest.net
    4. installed striking again via wordpress theme installer
    5. Striking picked up all the stored settings, but the sliders were borked
    6. emptied cache. It fixed my slider
    7. Uploaded the new striking-child via wordpress theme installer
    8. activated the child theme
    9. emptied cache again.
    10. copied my custom changes back into the striking-child theme
    11. copied my fontface fonts into the striking-child theme

    All is well now!

Also, I am running on WPMU and using WPML and all is well.

One random question - In the wordpress back-end should it now say "striking child" instead of "striking" ? It never said that before? Just making sure all is OK. :)
  • does anything get fixed, or does everyone just post more issues?
Please when you have a fix post it clearly and lock the subject this is ridiculous.
did you fix the issues, if so what is the fix, and what is the cause to not run into the same issue, permissions? PhP? Firewall? poorly written script? Did you fix it to update? If not did you remove the feature?
  • Hello,
After upgrading to 5.1.8.1, I have several problems:

1-Homepage/Homepage SlideShow / SlideShow Source does not work in Chrome / Safari.
2-The featured images are not displayed. example:

    http://is-arquitectura.es/2010/03/

I've noticed that this problem occurs for those articles published before the change to Striking theme (I did in May 2011).

    Regards
  • Add more information. The problem occurs when I select "Featured Image Type = Full Width".
  • My issue is Fixed - done the update manually
  • mine is still waiting to be fixed :/ any comments on my issue?

    -----
Just narrowed it down to the history function. Disabeling the history restores the tab function.
@Striking Team: Do you have any explanation for this?

    Thanks for your help!

    Tobias

  • Hi

I regret that I and Lin have been absent for most of the last while, although we have been slogging away in the background on code and videos, and lots of other stuff. Poor Paul has been toughing it out, and doing great work to answer so many questions.

I and Lin will both be more of a presence on the forum, and to issues over the next few days. I have responded to some of the pm's received, and will catch up on this thread in particular on Friday and through the weekend.

  • Hi
After update to v 5.1.8.1 contact form still not working. After clicking submit button 'Thank you' text is appearing but email is not sending. In response i see 'fail' text.
You can check this in my site in footer: www.duchowainspiracja.pl

    EDIT:
It's working now, i had to configure smtp.
But I think contact form shouldn't display 'Thank you' text when response is 'fail'.
  • I have Striking 3.0.4 and I want to upgrade it. I am using wordpress 3.4 (I know, I made the mistake by upgrading too early). I follow the instructions above to upgrade striking but I do not see anywhere in the Wordpress dashboard that allows me to upgrade striking. It gives me the option to update Twenty Eleven or Twenty Ten but not striking. Please advise. Also, after I upgraded to wordpress 3.4 videos don't work on my site and my contact form is mangled. Please advise. thanks.
