On the issue of a fluid width theme, we will not be building it into Striking directly.
Lin and I are now employed by a software development company, and working as part of a team building a brand new WP framework/theme. Definitely a factor in their headhunting us was our very large Striking customer base, and our relationships with many web designers (there are at my last count over 200 who use Striking for their own customers), whom they hope to tap into.
We retain our independent status and sole control over Striking, but our focus on Striking going forward will be maintaining Striking for WP and browser updates. This forthcoming Striking release, besides some bug swatting, has a number of new smaller enhancements.
In respect to the responsive/fluid width, and further enhancements on mobile compatibility, the company is developing an add-on for Striking, which will be available at some relatively nominal cost (I was last advised somewhere in the $15-$20 range but I don't believe anything is set in stone). This is independent of us - ie third party. We ourselves have not tackled this for Striking as given that Striking is approaching 2 yrs in age and the size of the customer base, there will be some legacy issues - implementation of the add-on will almost certainly mean that users will have to adjust some of their custom css plus undoubtedly the odd user here and there will run into other implementation issues, and Lin and I (and Paul lest we forget him toiling away in the trenches) are too few an army to provide support for this type of endeavor.
My understanding is that timeframe for the fluid width, responsive add-on is about 45 -60 days away.
One thing I do like is that part of the development process ongoing in our new home is to provide an avenue for Striking users who want to jump to the new theme. I will tell you all right now - you will want to do that. The features being implemented in the new design are unmatched by any theme in the market - there is enough horsepower on board to tackle all the different design aspects that Lin and I could never touch on our own, just not enough time.
None of this stuff will be available on Themeforest. It has too many features, and costs more then the Themeforest matrix allows. The company owners would rather forge their own way, on their own terms, something I completely understand.
Lin and I may eventually build another theme for themeforest in our status as independent developers, but for now, supporting Striking for the imminent havoc the next WP release is going to cause, plus our new work here, has our schedule full up for the foreseeable future.
Also, lets be clear on this point - Striking is not being abandoned. The next goal in our eyes for Striking beyond this forthcoming release, which focuses on incremental upgrades and swatting exotic errors, is supporting it through the next set of WP core upgrades, and our next sales target for Striking is 15000 sales. So Striking plans to be around for a long, long time. In fact, our hope is that with access to a bigger team and knowledge base, we hope to trickle down to Striking some of the knowledge we are gaining in our new full time home.
@Websys = Will you guys be announcing here where and when we can get a hold of your new theme/framework? Just trying to figure out how to purchase it when it becomes available. Very excited about it!!! Is there a site or blog we can check out to view the status of this new endeavor?
On update matters, we are slaving away...... I have indicated an approximate timeframe, assuming all goes as planned, in my update message in the forum header today.
We are still slaving away, and you can certainly blame me for part of the delay. Oct 24 - yes, one day after posting on the 23 about progress, I came down with a really wicked flu and while I am now many pounds lighter, and starting to get on the mend ( i think i am about 75%-80%) it has put a hole in our timeline once again.
This is a major undertaking on our part, and while it has meandered a bit for various reasons, I want to re-itereate two things:
a) we don't want to rush this out and not deal with all the things we want to attend b) we are still hard at work!
Paul has had the unenviable task of attending the forum virtually all by himself for several days now. Truly, it is not good to be in his shoes as this can be a thankless task. His working here is what gives the rest of us time to focus on the update related matters, although he has responsibilities to that task as well. And all the errors anyone finds, or thinks they have found first work there way through him on the investigative side. Its really not much fun to be him at this moment!
I am going to try to be more of a presence on the forum over then next few days as well. The revised help fields in the next release (see attached screenshots) - will also alleviate some of the questions, as well as the vids forthcoming.
I attached a couple of screenshots so you can see some of the new layout and help fields, and you will note the shortcode is for the image shortcode which has new settings, some of which will impact your display of pictures in a big way (sorry, some of the settings don't show in the image.... ;) )
I still have a lot of settings to update - it is a never ending task it seems! Had I not been sick....
@WebSys - Keep up the great work! You guys rock!!! I know the new Striking update will be the bomb and well worth the wait. We appreciate the desire to do things right. I believe that has been part of the ultimate success of Striking!
I also wanted to ask about the endeavor you and the Kaptin are doing with the software company. You stated a while back, "Lin and I are now employed by a software development company, and working as part of a team building a brand new WP framework/theme." Is this something completely different than the new Striking theme? If so, can you provide any details about that? It sounds very exciting!!!!! :\">
Do you have any time frame as to when we will be expecting Striking R? I understand it takes a lot of work to get all of this done from reading all the above posts, but am getting anxious! :) Will any custom CSS we have now work with the new striking R? Will woocommerce still be supported?
Yes please! Then that new theme would be close to perfection. I would replace (buy again) each of the Striking licenses I currently have with this new theme.
BTW bebban you are right, smashingmagazine.com is a great piece of work. I encourage everybody to have a look at it and play resizing the browser window. Absolutely amazing. Thanks for the tip.
Do you think you could make it possible to easy upgrade clients that already have striking with content and lots of custom css, or do we have to rebuild?
Is there any functions/shortcodes in striking that you know of that the new responsive version wont support and were there are no easy solution like a plugin?
I would love to have one base theme "canvas" with childthemes for responsive "mobile", shop, buddypress and were you customize one theme and its updated on all!
Creating sites for bigger screens and resolutions is the shit:)
thank you for closing my thread, sorry i missed this one, i did a search but somehow missed it. I really hope you incorporate this feature, as EVERY new and up and coming theme has it. So to stay competitive it really is a must.
What i understand there will be (shortly i hope) a solution for it. but not in the next update of striking.
But i do not have inside info on the exact plans and time table on this. Maybe websys can shine more light on this. But it is on the table open for discussion.. so...
Fluid width =/= responsive. In my experience, fluid width responsive themes are a headache more than anything else. It's better to have multiple responsive steps than have fewer steps with a fluid width.
Are you all sure you know what you're looking for?! This theme is built on a fairly cross-platform friendly system anyway the 960gs (960px grid system) which in my experience means it works really well on iPad, iPhone, PlayBook, Laptops of all sizes and even blackberry / android smart phones.
If however you are looking for a new trend "Mobile Version" of the theme that is CSS3 or responsive with mobile formatting in mind (shuffled / layered content), then why not look to implement one yourself?
All you need is a bit of Java Script to recognise the platform then either JQuery or CSS to adjust the design accordingly.
How many people would be interested in a child theme that would adjust the content to mobile version?
Go to my Facebook site and let me know if that's something you want, if I get enough people say they want it I'll build one for you all.
I don't want to let the cat out of the bag, but given all the comments in this thread I need to advise we are releasing a 2nd year anniversary update of Striking shortly, and perhaps something everyone has been asking for will be addressed in it.......
Yes, we hope. To do all the things we need to do, plus want to do, for the update, is challenging. I was hoping for Sept 28, but now I think may be unrealistic. But no later then Oct 6.
I hate to dash anyone's expectations, but we are not going to be releasing on Oct 6. I do say above on my post of Sept 21 that we are working to release by Oct 16, and we are working very hard to meet that target.
Paul sent me a note about your posts as he was a little alarmed, lol.
Could you please give us an indication of how far off this update is? I'm waiting to produce a completely new site based on this theme and need to know whether to crack on now or wait. Many Thanks, Nick
I apologize for the delay. Once you see what we are doing, you will understand why it is taking this time. We have a tentative revised date about oct 25-27. You need the responsive version, correct? It has several new sliders (really lovely ones) plus a new lightbox script, amongst many other things. Its not just a slight change of css to attempt a responsive version, but a ton of new code. I will leak one thing to you, it includes the premium chop slider, and three new premium slides are part of the update!
Many thanks for the update James. It sounds fantastic! - as I need the responsive version I'll definitely wait for the update before cracking ahead with the new site.
Will the responsive update include an update to your demo materials? (which are very useful to get started).
We are really looking forward to the new version and check out your website every day. So, would you be able to inform us shortly on the current status?
Still plugging away. Right now working on combing threads for errors and suggestions that we may have overlooked, plus misc coding work (touchups), etc. We are still looking at a few days we think, for everything to be to our satisfaction.
