  • How did you make it work? I have the same question/problem.
  • its actually very easy. you drop in the gallery short code and get the frame for the gallery in the editor window. when you click on it you can see two little icons in the upper left corner. click on the one that looks like a pic and cam and just add the images. that basically it...
  • I'm a newbie obviously but this just confuses the heck out of me. I also want to build galleries. So you say just 'drop in the short code' (OK where do I get it and where do I drop it?) and 'get the frame from the gallery in the editor' (I'm hearing blah blah blah). We newbies are very grateful for the help you seasoned guys give us but we also need it spelled out step by step for dummies, if you speak in short cuts we just get even more bewildered and frustrated. That means more work for you and more high blood pressure for us. So help us to move from dummy to seasoned user with a little more step by step explanation. Thanks on behalf of all frustrated newbies. Or is it just me? Thanks.
  • Hi guys,

Maybe you can learn from http://en.support.wordpress.com/images/gallery if you want set up a gallery.

  • No, ccfifty2, it is not just you. I'm having issues as well, and these quick instructions do little to no good. Come on, it's easy to do a step-by-step. How about some help here. I've been an IT exec for years, and have always had to press developers to get 'simple' and complete with instructions.
  • Here's the instructions from the PDF:

    6.1 Creating A Portfolio Item
You want to add a new portfolio item, follow the steps below:
    1. Go to Portfolio items-> Add New.
    2. Select a Featured Image [Select?]. It will show as thumbnail in the portfolio items list [And this is where?]. [Make sure to NAME your instructions EXACTLY as they are named in the PDF - gotta do this.]
Learn from wordpress offical document about how to add a featured image.
Go to Striking -> Portfolio, locate Featured Image module, you can change the
    featured image settings.
    3. Locate Portfolio Item Options module. Change the settings to you prefer.
    4. Then fill the title, and add the detail of portfolio to the content editor. You can also add
the description text that will show in the portfolio items list page to the Excerpt module.
    5. Once you have done, click Publish button.

What we need is a simple: How to create, how to use, and how to view type of step-by-step. My $.02.
  • Here I am to save the day! Again :P

OK Step by Step super basic instructions as requested.

1/ Back everything up. NEVER try anything new unless you've fully backed up all your post's, pages and files!

2/ Update to the latest version of Word Press and Striking this guide only works on the latest version of both.

3/ Whether editing a page, post, portfolio item or whatever above the text editor in the icon bar there is a teeny weeny icon that looks like a Picture with a music note. Click this.

    Link to the icon: http://en.support.files.wordpress.com/2009/08/add-media1.png?w=1200&h=

4/ Navigate to the folder with the pre edited images you wish to upload to your gallery on your PC or Mac using Windows or OSx.

5/ Drag all the images into the *New* Word Press Upload area.

Link to the upload area: http://en.support.files.wordpress.com/2009/08/drop-media1.png?w=1200&h=

6/ Once all the images are uploaded and you've edited there ALT tags, Click "Save As".

7/ Edit the "Gallery Settings" i.e. Descending, Ascending etc... (If you wish to further sort the order do this now by editing the ORDER area on the images above)
Link to further image sorting: http://en.support.files.wordpress.com/2009/09/gallery-order-fields.gif?w=1000&h=

8/ Click "Insert Gallery" button. Your done. This will generate a slightly different looking shortcode to Kap's version: e.g. [gallery link="file"]

*Note this is the ONLY way to do this. You cannot upload via FTP and cheat, it works using the WP SQL and as far as I know is a WP feature, not Striking!

Good Luck and I'm here for those people that need this working but can't do it...at a small fee of course.

  • Thanks for the help everyone, I'll have one last try but after that I think I might just go back to building static sites from scratch in Dreamweaver using tableless CSS. Wordpress appears to be full of limitations, author tricks and gobbledygook to cause you to want to do yourself harm just to end the nightmare. Maybe it should be called 'Brainpress'. I could have built 6 static CSS sites in the time it's taken to get around one simple page issue using Wordpress. Yesterday I tried to upload another video using the same method that I used to successfully upload my first video. Do you think it worked? No it didn't. With all due respect, saying "Maybe you can learn from http://en.support.wordpress.com/images/gallery if you want set up a gallery." doesn't really help either because that offers generic advice and there are often great chasms between what Wordpress Org says and what you actually see on the Wordpress template that you've forked out money for. But hey, thanks for trying every one. As for paying a small fee to jckpalmer, I'll pass thanks. This template has already been paid for with cash and blood. Maybe one day I'll get to actually use it.
  • Hi ccfifty2

I agree with you that Wordpress generic photo gallery is not intuitive and is confusing.

To create a gallery (using the gallery shortcode) one has to first attach images to the post or page. Adding to the confusion is that the featured image is not an attached image and many times attached images aren't shown on the post or page.

One has to go into the media library and look at each image to see if it is attached to a post or is unattached. Confusing yes!!!

That being said there are literally 100s of Wordpress plugins that make the whole concept a little easier. NexGen Gallery is one popular gallery that has been around a long time http://wordpress.org/extend/plugins/nextgen-gallery/

You could try that one or the one

But I do take issue and I guess one could say offense when you wrote that "Wordpress is full of limitations, author tricks and gobbledygook". That is just not true.

Further, Prefacing your criticism of KaptinLin with "with all due respect" and stating that he is just offering 'generic' help with the gallery link, shows how little your understanding of Wordpress is, how little you know of what KaptinLin has accomplished and how little time you have spent on this forum.

Both KaptinLin and the forum members offer far more detailed support than most templates that cost $40. Your implication is just not true; all one needs to do is cruz through the forum or contact the 1,000s of successful websites that use Striking.

Honestly, I don't know what you are talking about when you compare a static site to Wordpress CMS nor how you can even begin to compare a "Dreamweaver site using table-less CSS" to what Kaptinlin has created here - full blown HTML5 site with CSS3 and more sophisticated JQuery than is found in 99% of the Wordpress templates and that works across ALL major browsers AND all for $40.

I am sorry comparing a static "Dreamweaver site using table-less CSS" to what Kaptinlin has created here is like comparing a finger-painting to the works of Picasso.

The majority of the users who are successful here, first READ the documentation, then ask for help on the forum or READ the documentation from Wordpress or the literally thousands of tutorials regarding all things Wordpress.

But, hey, I'll still help you anytime for free - send me a link and the issue you are having - but that is OK too if you want to go back to your static "Deamweaver with table-less CSS" site.

  • Hi Runner 2009, thank you for the suggestion of NexGEN gallery, as I couldn't get the Stricking theme's portfolio to work, this was a huge help!
  • Actually I have read the documentation, but thanks for suggesting it as an option. I have all 46 pages or so printed out right here beside me on my desk. Yes, to his credit, Kaptinlin does offer far more help than others and he even answers emails. You mention the sheer number of people on the forum, that's my point. It's the sheer volume of requests for help like mine that lead me to suggest that just maybe the documentation isn't quite hitting the mark. That is in no way a personal attack. You mention "how little my understanding of Wordpress is". Fair enough, I'll cop that little personal jibe on the chin because it's true and it's also kind of my point. When customers seek assistance or even complain, smart service providers see it as free market research. They don't take offence they see it as feedback which tells them how they can do something better and become even more successful. Services marketing 101. Sometimes it's just little bits of info that is missing that for experienced Wordpress gurus like you, might seem trivial or unnecessary, but to newbies like me they're critical. However, you are entitled to your opinion of course and I respect your right to be indignant and to throw the odd verbal punch. So, from this dumb, clueless Wordpress user, if you find my comments offensive, I'm sorry. No offence was meant to Kaptinlin, but why you are personally taking offence at comments not even directed at you is a little puzzling. Have a nice day.

You know, this is the usual problem here in the Forum, I guess its why Kaptinlin and the team has put my "Customisation Post" as a Sticky on the forum (which I sincerely appreciate guys btw!).

To be honest ccfifty2, I wouldn't take your money, I've offered you the answer to your problem for free. Using my resolution I can get the gallery to work on multiple sites using the Striking Short-codes, as a way to also style the images making them look awesome!

There are currently 2 ways to add gallery's to Striking...

1/ Is through the use of the IMAGE Short-code using "Lightbox" and "Lightbox Categories". More work.

2/ The other is using the GALLERY Short-code and then uploading a batch of images using the WP_Media Library.

3/ You can add Gallery by portfolio which is correctly pointed out by BackUps...

Here's a link to an example of this: http://wheeliesmotorcycles.com/portfolio/

I hope you find the time to solve your problem it's really not as difficult as you think.

    Good Luck

  • Hi Jack,

There is a third option. You can also add a gallery by portfolio..... which is rather easy and nice.
