Sticky Thread - Your Modification Suggestions for Striking
  • Every day there are quite a number of posts by users with "suggestions" as to what they either believe should be in Striking, or what they would like to see as incorporated as a new feature in future upgrades.

We want to streamline the forum, and now require that all such suggestions be posted in this thread.

Below I have posted a few from recent threads (which are deleted once I have moved them here).

Kaptinlin will be reviewing this to determine what he feels has merit and is workable with Striking.

You can also vote on every suggestion by using the left side arrows to "bump" up its vote total. Please do not bump your own!!

Please keep the suggestions and feedback civil. And this is not a complaint thread - its sole purpose is for Striking suggestions and anything else will be "ruthlessly" deleted.

    Let the suggestions begin!

    Happy Striking

  • Please consider combining all images in striking/images/ into css sprites. That would give everyone a nice page speed boost..!
  • Make striking SEO plugin friendly. I know that striking already does a wonderful job with SEO, but I think that we can go that extra mile.

Currently, it's nearly impossible to install and make striking work correctly with most of the powerful SEO plugins out there.

For instance, WordPress SEO by Yoast, HeadSpace2, HeadSpace4, etc all demand that you give them control over the page title section.
This means that one must edit header.php and substitute

    <title><?php theme_generator('title'); ?></title>

    by

    <title><?php wp_title(''); ?></title>

The problem with this approach? Striking is a very complex theme and it does not obey to that. In all my tries, it never worked like it should.

So, I propose that the skin has a "Let WordPress SEO by Yoast, HeadSpace2, HeadSpace4, etc control page Title" switch that we can turn on or off.

  • Suggestion:

Make the page width configurable. We are now bond to a 960px width. Make it configurable or at least bigger. According to the latest statistics, 96% of the used screens are now 1024px or bigger.

    We could have 3 modes:
    960px
    1024px
user configurable (this one could take care of everything)

    MASS PORTFOLIO CREATION TOOL

I really need a portfolio generator

    Hi, there
Portfolios are fine! But it's too trivial to add them 1 by 1 from media library.
I will be very glad to see the future function if it can: auto generate batch portfolios with feature image on it from chosen media images. (maybe inherit the same name for convenience, and hopefully I can choose the target portfolio category as well)

    thank you so much anyway

  • Along with the width suggestion I posted above, we could have the freedom to have more design options.

As it stands, we can only have 2 types of design:
    - content area only
    - content area + sidebar (be it right or left sidebar)

I propose that one more sidebar is created. This should allow for more design variations besides the ones already existing:
    - content + 2 sidebars (we can choose to be it right or left sidebars)
    - left sidebar + centered content area + right sidebar

Why this request? To maximize space above the folder, aka the part of the screen the user immediately sees when it opens up a page, without the need to scroll.

    CUSTOM FOOTER SUGGESTION:

It would be nice to have an option to make different footers for pages (i hoping this can't be done currently and that I just haven't overlooked it.) Along the same lines as we can use striking image" /> sidebar to make different sidebars. We could have different footer content (footer1, footer2, etc.) and assign them to pages via a drop down menu, just like we can with the sidebars.
    Great theme regardless.
    Thanks

    BLOG SUGGESTION

He would like to see the following changes to the Blog Shortcode:

    Hello
I have been trying to use the blog shortcode showing 2 columns and 6 posts/entries - however, this looks nice, if the content is about the same length and none of the title wraps - otherwise it leads to a really ugly layout of the page. There should be an option to actually set columns per row with a clear float after each row - this would ensure that each entry in a row would start at the same level - something like this: http://return-true.com/2010/05/creating-a-post-thumbnail-grid-in-wordpress/.

The same thing is basically true using the column shortcodes - as only the last column has a clear: right. if you have two columns and then you for instance have three columns below that and you add a lot of text into the left column of the two columns, all the three columns that are supposed to show below the two columns will basically float into the right column above. there should be either a clear both after each row of columns or all the columns within a row should be wrapped in a column wrap.

Interesting commentary. This is from a recent thread of his, which I have now deleted as the request was about these features.

all the way back in Oct 2010 (I am busy deleting old threads!)

    CUSTOM LOGO SUGGESTION

He would like the ability to have a custom logo per page:

It would nice to be able to offer a custom site logo on a per-page/post basis. Some of my pages contain seasonal content therefore I would like to offer a "christmas" version of my logo for the christmas page and maybe and so on.

Another member isogabamaware echoed the thought at the time, so I have already voted this up one.

For everyone's info, Kaptinlin stated he did not think the theme needed this. What do you think? Vote away!

  • Okay, this is like requesting an Olympic sized swimming pool in my backyard when the one I have now is already beautiful...but since you asked:

A sliding garage door at the top of the page. Click on the button and content (either widgets or page content) slides down smoothly.

I do miss this feature from the Unite theme:
    http://themeforest.net/item/unite-wordpress-business-magazine-theme/full_screen_preview/90959
    Click on Features-> Login-> Slide 2
  • Suggestion:

    1. Bulk upload of portfolio items.

UPDATE: I think these votes should be added to the "MASS PORTFOLIO CREATION TOOL" comment above. They both refer to the same function.

    Thanks Websys
  • how about fully support child themes - this would make customization a lot easier and allowing for a clean update path.
  • On the home page, you have the option to either set a regular home page or use the homepage slider in conjunction with the html in the theme options page.

I would like to be able to set the home page content (under the slider) to any page within the site.

As an example, there is a drop down box that pulls all the pages within the site. When I set this drop down to display page "BlahBlahBlah", the homepage displays the slider at the top and page content for "BlahBlahBlah" underneath.

  • I would love it if you could support the multi-lingual plugin qTranslate:
    http://www.qianqin.de/qtranslate/

Update: Just realised how easy it was to get qTranslate going using the Header Widget Area and the qTranslate widget... :)
  • I feel guilty for asking, as there's so much that's easy to change about this theme, but ...

First, have options to color the different "link" types. I'd like "read more..." in one color and the meta info with the blog post (author, date, category, etc.) to be in another.

Second, give us the ability to change the font or delete the word Search from the search box.

    Thanks!
  • Suggestion: Add sub header

Sub-header: There is a built in sub-footer (thin bar at bottom with links), but no sub-header (thin bar at very top for links). This simple addition would be very practical.
  • Custom image for Login page to replace WordPress logo.
  • A first suggestion come from member "dotjuice"!

    GOOGLE MAP FUNCTIONALITY SUGGESTION

He would like to see the google maps function work in accordions. It currently works in page, widgets and tabs.

I voted this one up so everyone could see the "1" beside the post along with the up and down arrows.

This is from a recent thread of his, which I have now deleted as the request was about this feature.

  • Here is a suggestion from member "ManuelFritsch"

    FOOTER LAYOUT SUGGESTION:

He would like to see the following ability in the footer:

I would like to suggest a completely customizable Footer Column layout - in line with the overall philosophy of Striking!

At the moment, I myself would like to have one-quarter, one-half, one-quarter, just to try it out. Or one-half, one-third, one-sixth... well, I could be very creative.

By the way, I pointed out that the footer currently has 14 layout options, and one can also set a single column and style it via a test widget (I would not recommend but it can be done).

Don't forget everyone that you can stack widgets in each footer column as well.

    on behalf Manuel Fritsch
  • The ability to utilize that blank space in the header on the right (underneath the menu).

The title and custom text would fill about 2/3 of the feature section. The extra blank space (HTML based?) would be the other 1/3....

This could be done globally or page by page.
  • Would you consider adding googles new +1 Icon to the "Striking - Social Icon" list?
  • The ability to make 3 column pages, with left sidebar, middle and right sidebar, like www.cinema.se
and also the possibility to select widht of the columns.

Not only will you get an extra content area but you could also use it for design issues
  • Just back from WordCamp SF and I'm totally jazzed about the opportunity to use post formats - it would be great if this could be built into a future version of Striking. I know I can program it myself via php & css, but it would be great if there's an easy way to do it through the Striking admin panel.

    Thanks for considering!
  • I would love to see the ability to control the look of the text in the block quotes (color, size, etc.)

    Thank you!
  • I'd like to see the search function on this forum made more useful. No matter what I'm searching for, I get a huge number of posts having nothing to do with it and none that do. An advanced search feature would save me bugging people for answers I could probably find if search worked better.

    Hi.

I agree. A google custom search widget would be great.

  • BETTER TABLES

    Hi,
I found myself using a lot of tables to display and compare data/products/options and it would have been nice if you could add more styles for them (tables/pricing tables) you can see some of the examples below something like ElegantThemes and Karma have:
    http://www.elegantthemes.com/preview/Feather/?page_id=167
    http://themes.truethemes.net/Karma/features/pricing-table-demo
    http://codecanyon.net/theme_previews/234948-css3-web-pricing-tables-pack-grids-?index=6
    http://codecanyon.net/item/pricelr-ultimate-pricing-tables-solution/full_screen_preview/157220
  • Suggestion: Add shortcode for related posts in posts/page.

There is an option to add recent and popular posts in posts/page under shortcodes > widget area, but there is no option for related posts. This would be a very useful addition.
  • Please consider adding the ability to change slider width as well as height
  • Add an option under Blog Settings to globally set a default Feature Header Type for posts/pages (i.e. Default, Title only, Custom text only, Title & custom text, SlideShow). Currently these options can only be set in each blog post's settings, not globally. It's a bit tedious.
  • Add a Footer Column layout of TWO_THIRDS | ONE THIRD

  • Make the theme responsive for mobile devices, rather than requiring a separate plugin (like WPTouch, etc) to handle this.
  • Add this wicked awesome slider as a slider type for this theme. It would make Striking the BEST theme ever:
When I saw this, it just made me want to move to this theme, but striking is still beter everywhere else. It would be great to see this slider type added as an option for Striking.
    http://themeforest.net/item/tersus-responsive-wordpress-theme/full_screen_preview/2343187
  • Fixed Header / Menu option.

A top menu that don't scroll with the content.

    Best regards,
    Torstein
  • Suggestion:

Ability to work with nextGEN image gallery plugin
  • Enjoying the great new update and wanted to know if you plan on upgrading Piecemaker to the new Piecemaker 2, I would love to be able to use the new features, like embedding swf files into the slides. I would go and install the plugin, but I am worried about it's compatibility with the theme and I dont want to mess up a good thing. Thanks
  • I would like to see the blog widget or regular archives be able to sort using the quicksand jquery sort as the custom post profile does
  • I have figured out how to separate the content of the page from the left and right area by changing the background color on the separate .inner classes. What happens then is that all the content sits on the very edges on the pages - I have to nudge the .main and .sidebar classes in the CSS. It would be great to be able to separate the page content with color and background images without having to deal with left-right margins and padding.

I think allowing for easy background images and optional page content background color would take this theme's already outstanding usability and flexibility to a level unmatched by any other.
  • I would like to see that the custom post type say Portfolio name be defined in the Theme Options array as a variable. That way the registered custom post type can be changed in one place - so portfolio could be renamed say listings. This change would make it so that coordinating it with the change of slug etc, and not have to worry that the it would affect any 'down stream' process. (Hope this makes sense)

Also, be able to use the blog shortcode and have the columns sort via the jQuery Quicksand plugin like the portfolio items do.
  • Hi,
    my little 2 suggestions
Add link to parent page on the sub navigation widget.
Add sub-sub-pages on the sub navigation widgets
    :-)
    PS: the theme rocks
  • Would you consider offering built-in support for Google Web fonts? Many thanks
  • A new +1 icon to the Social Icon list is a good idea. I'll vote for that.
  • I would like to have a tumblog integration with striking using tumblog plugin from Woo themes. I tried customizing the theme using this tutorials i found on the net but to no avail. The page can be customized using Child themes or custom CSS but the tumblr functionality is absent.
If someone else with deep PHP knowledge is out there, please help. Thanks again for the best wordpress theme out there. I know the tumblr functionality is gonna work, just pity i don't know my way around it.

    N.B: Tutorials is here http://www.woothemes.com/support/wootumblog/

Update: This is supposed to be a suggestion for future striking integration with tumblr-like functionality, not an issue with 3rd party plug-in. if there's quick easy fix around it, please consider deleting this or transferring to where you think it belongs.
  • Compress theme images!
  • MORE STYLES FOR MENU

It also would have been nice to have more options to style the menu from the admin panel and have more flexibility as far as additional content like images and styled boxes in the menu something like:
    http://codecanyon.net/theme_previews/126387-css3-mega-drop-down-menu?index=3
  • Suggestion: Allow option for external source URL entry for custom image. Example attached.
    featured-image.png
    336 x 212 - 4K
  • Striking + Wordpress + Facebook Fan Page
I've noticed a few themes are starting to incorporate wordpress themes with facebook fan pages. Facebook fan pages are huge for business, it would be cool if Stiking had this also.
  • Please consider adding a native Google+ button to the Striking Social Icon Widget
  • Show child page when clicking parent link if parent have children. As you can see in the demo of Striking, parent pages (top level) contains no information or content. All content is displayed in the child pages. Is there a way to show (redirect to) the first child page after clicking on a parent menu item (top level)?

I really want an option to choose what the top-level menu items do. Or show parent (top-level) page or show first child page.
  • Add slick, beautiful, jQuery-driven animation of Portfolio items on click, like in this theme:
    http://designcirc.us/themes/?theme=Bookcase(Portfolio)
  • Please add a nice framed (box) around the blog index entries.
